A Stunning And Extremely Charming Early 19th Century Pair Of Fruitwood Folk Art, Swiss Escabelle Chairs, Or Hall Chairs, Retaining Wonderfully Rich Colour And Patina Throughout, With Attractive Pierced & Interlaced Decoration To Backs, Over Highly Figured Seats And Elegant Turned Faceted Legs.

The term Escabelle translates directly to footstool, or footrest, but when used in the context of antique furniture it is directly applied to these types of chairs that were made with great care and attention to detail in the Swiss Alps. There are many, many examples to be found from the late 19th century and early 20th century, but the earlier examples which date to the start of the 19th century are much harder to find.

These are of course a quite wonderful example of their type, with the highly figured fruitwood, which incidentally is almost certainly pear, possibly apple, having taken on a quite stunning lustre and surface over the years. The carving the backs is also absolutely lovely and great care has been taken during the constuction of these rather lovely chairs.

Of course they are also of the design which we would now more commonly refer to in England as hall chairs and amongst a myriad of other potential uses they would indeed serve as wonderful hall chairs in the modern home.

Overall the condition is very good, with them having been inspected and attended to by our trained antique furniture restorers. There are no structural defects or historic breaks to be concerned about and overall the chairs are in a very functional condition. They have also received a natural wax polish before being placed on sale to ensure that they are in optimum condition before being placed into the home.
