An Extremely Attractive Large Early 18th Century English George I Period Oak Dresser Base, Or Sideboard, Retaining Good Rich Colour And Surface Throughout, Having Well Figured Rectangular Top Over Three Drawers To Frieze, With Replacement Old Brass Handles, Raised On Four Elegant Baluster Turned Legs With Square Sections.

Oak dresser bases were an important and practical form of domestic furniture throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, originally providing both a useful working surface and easily accessible storage within the home. As a result they were generally subjected to considerable use and it is increasingly difficult to find good early examples which retain the character, colour and surface that makes them so desirable today.

This is a particularly attractive example, dating from the early part of the 18th century and of slightly larger proportions than the norm. Constructed from well chosen English oak throughout, it has developed a good rich colour and pleasing surface over the course of some 300 years, with the inevitable old marks, wear and minor imperfections, which one would expect on an item of this age, blending beautifully into the overall surface of the piece

The three drawers are of good practical size and the replacement old brass handles have clearly been in place for a considerable period of time and sit very comfortably on the piece.

Dresser bases of this type remain incredibly practical pieces of furniture for modern day living and the impressive length of this example makes it even more suitable for use as a sideboard in a dining room or kitchen, whilst still maintaining characteristically shallow depth which means it will work just as well in a hallway or general living space.

As with all the items which we offer for sale, it has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled and experienced traditional antique furniture restorers, ensuring that it is ready for placement straight into the home. Please note that there is a working lock and key for the just the middle drawer.
