An Extremely Rare Early 18th Century, George I Period, Burr Walnut Card Table, Retaining Wonderful Untouched Colour And Patina Throughout, The Superbly Figured Foldover Top With Featherbanding And Crossbanded Decoration, Enclosing Baized Playing Surface With Money Wells And Candle Stands To Corners, Over Superbly Figured Frieze All Around, Unusually With Original Brass Plate Handle To Reverse And Pull Out Concertina Action, Raised On Four Elegant Cabriole Legs, Terminating On Original Turned Pad Feet.

A fabulous early 18th century Georgian card table which is incredibly elegant, but also over 300 years on it is as fit for purpose as the day it was made.

Not only is it elegant and functional, but it is a lovely example of its type, retaining a wonderful rich colour and patina which is rarely found.

The burr walnut veneers boast a tight, curled grain and in combination with the rich colour this creates a lovely decorative effect. In fact the attention to detail of the construction throughout is obvious with the featherbanded decoration, lovely brass handle and figured walnut veneers to the reverse and the elegant cabriole legs.

The top is opened by folding it over onto the rear legs which have been folded out using the concertina action as was generally regarded the best, but trickiest way of doing things in the early 18th century. Inside there is a baized playing surface and attractive money, or counter wells, along with four flat veneered areas which were originally designed for placing candlesticks on without damaging the playing surface.

Overall the condition of the table is really very good when taking into account its age, with just a few historic old scuffs, scrapes, scratches, cracks and losses that blend into the overall surface which one would more than expect on a table of this age. There are also no structural issues of any kind.

As with all items which we offer for sale this georgian card table has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish to ensure that it is in its absolute best possible condition and ready for immediate placement within the home before being placed on sale.

This is a really great example of early 18th century Georgian cabinet making and something which would grace any collection or home. It is incredibly beautiful to look at and as mentioned previously it is also very much fit for original purpose. It would also make a great side, or console table in the right spot.
