Antique Georgian Mahogany Cheese Coaster (England, circa 1800)
Antique Georgian Mahogany Cheese Coaster (England, circa 1800)
A delightful George III period mahogany boat Shaped cheese coaster having superbly figured Top with turned ends and applied roundel decoration (Cheese coasters, as the name suggests, were originally made to present the cheese at the end of a meal and be easily passed backwards and forwards up and down what were often very long dining tables. These days of course if they are not to be used for their original purpose then there is a plethora of functions which they can perform, including but not limited to fruit bowls, somewhere to gather keys and nik naks on top of a hall table and a vessel for pot pouri or similar. This is an unusual example in terms of not having the usual division down the middle and being slightly larger. It has an importance to it and is constructed from exceptional quality mahogany with beautifully carved roundel decoration. It was clearly made in a good workshop by an extremely skilled craftsman and is one of the best examples of its type that we have handled), circa 1800. Measures: Height – 9.5in Width – 17in Depth – 15.5in.
