19th Century Yew Windsor Armchair (England, circa 1840)
19th Century Yew Windsor Armchair (England, circa 1840)
A Very Attractive And Good Quality Mid 19th Century High Back Yew Wood Windsor Armchair Having Elegant Christmas Tree Type Pierced Splat And Well Figured Elm Seat Raised On Turned Legs United By Crinoline Stretcher.
The humble windsor chair in varying sizes, shapes, forms and woods was a staple diet of English houses throughout the 19th century. There is such a huge variety that it is almost impossible to list them all here.
This particular example is a good one because it is constructed mainly from yew wood, a much more decorative, dense and hardwearing wood than the ash which the majority of this design were constructed from, it has a “Christmas tree” design splat to the back and it has a both elegant and practical crinoline, which means curved, stretcher to support the legs. Aside from being more elegant than a normal h stretcher, the crinoline stretcher also allows one to tuck their feet under the chair better whilst residing in it.
Overall the condition is very good and the chair retains a beautiful untouched colour and patina, with a particularly well figured elm seat. It has clearly been very much loved throughout the years of its life.
These high back windsor armchairs are perfect for such a huge variety of tasks around the modern home, from being placed at a farmhouse type dining table and used for eating at, to just a one off chair in a hallway which is good for perching on to take shoes and coats on and off, all the way through to perhaps being a bedside chair/clothes horse tucked away in the corner of a bedroom.
