19th Century English Giltwood Wall Mirror (England, circa 1850)
19th Century English Giltwood Wall Mirror (England, circa 1850)
A superb quality and elegant mid-19th century giltwood
wall mirror, formerly a picture frame, having attractive
carved decoration surrounding modern mirror plate
set in bold oval cushioned frame
(This elegant and decorative gilt frame would almost certainly
have started its life housing a grand portrait of some kind and
at some point in its history somebody has removed the painting
then repurposed what is a beautifully executed frame into a charming
mirror. The current mirror plate itself is a very recent replacement and
this means its condition is excellent with very little silvering or damage
to speak of. The gilt frame is also in good condition and surprisingly
robust for the design with just the usual and expected various old
repairs and cracks. It has a real charm and is a handy size, big enough
to hang in most spaces in most rooms and make a decorative impact,
whilst at the same time not being overpowering or overbearing).
