A Very Attractive 18th Century Georgian Oak Dresser Base, Or Sideboard, Retaining Superbly Rich Colour And Surface Throughout, The Well Figured Rectangular Top Over Three Frieze Drawers With Replacement Brass Oval Plate Handles, Raised On Very Elegant Baluster Turned Upright Supports, With Original Potboard Shelf And Square Block Feet Below.

This is a particularly attractive dresser base of good size and proportion, its relatively shallow depth making it extremely practical and suitable for a wide variety of spaces around the home. Equally importantly, it retains a superb rich colour and surface, developed naturally through many years of use, combined with the love and care which the piece has clearly received throughout its long life.

The brass oval plate handles are replacements, but are extremely attractive in their own right. Their design is entirely sympathetic to the period in which the dresser was constructed and they sit particularly well on the piece, appearing as though they could have been in place for many generations. It is, of course, extremely common to find replacement handles on practical pieces of antique furniture such as this, which would have been in almost constant everyday use.

Overall the condition is very good and, despite having clearly been well used over the course of more than 250 years, it has also been well cared for. The inevitable old marks, knocks, wear and minor imperfections have blended beautifully into the surface and contribute enormously to the charm and character which the piece now possesses.

As the name suggests, the original purpose of a potboard shelf was to provide convenient storage for all manner of pots, pans and other kitchen utensils. These could often have been heavy, wet or even still warm when returned to the shelf, meaning that original potboards frequently suffered considerable wear and tear and were sometimes replaced entirely. Of course this one retains its lovely original potboard shelf, another standout feature.

As with all items which we offer for sale, this dresser base has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our trained antique furniture restorers, where it has received a natural wax polish to ensure that it is ready for immediate placement within the home.
