18th Century Mahogany Georgian Secretaire Library Bookcase (England, circa 1750)
18th Century Mahogany Georgian Secretaire Library Bookcase (England, circa 1750)
A superb quality mid-19th century mahogany library bookcase
Having dentil cornice above pair of attractive astragal glazed
Doors to top and well fitted secretaire drawer above three
Long drawers with replaced brass handles flanked by fluted
Canted corners to base raised on elegant original ogee
Bracket feet
(This fabulous bookcase is an exceptional example of its type. Retaining
mostly original glass panelling to the doors it is not overpoweringly large
which is a very practical and unusual feature of bookcases made in this
period and style. It is beautiful blind fretwork carved decoration to the
secrétaire drawer and a good quality interior. Of course the secretaire drawer
would originally have been intended for the purpose of being leaned on for
writing brief correspondence. The mahogany used within the construction of
this bookcase is of the highest grade and even the drawer linings are constructed
from solid, polished mahogany which again is a nice sign of quality. The handles
are later replacements but through the holes of the original handles and in all
honesty they suit the bookcase extremely well. The elegant ogee feet are of course
original. Overall the bookcase is in excellent condition and would be a great addition
to any room in the home or office.)
