18th Century English Burr Elm And Laburnum Antique Chest Of Drawers (England, circa 1720)
18th Century English Burr Elm And Laburnum Antique Chest Of Drawers (England, circa 1720)
A Delightful And Rare Early 18th Century Georgian Burr
Elm And Laburnum Chest Having Superbly Figured Quarter
Veneered And Banded Top Over Two Short And Three Long
Drawers With Replacement Brasswear Raised On Original
Shaped Bracket Feet
(An absolutely charming example of a George I chest of drawers
this chest has elegance, grace, beauty and most important of all
is still fit for original function. The burr elm veneers which have
developed a wonderful rich, warm colour and patina over the 300
years of its life have been exquisitely selected and its nice to see
that the ends are veneered just as nicely as the top and drawer
which more often than not wasn’t the case in the early 18th century
with the cabinet maker opting more often than not to use a cheaper
grade straight grain veneer. Also interesting the cabinet maker has
chosen to construct the top and bottom moulding from Laburnum
wood which creates a lovely contrast against the burr elm veneers
used elsewhere. In terms of condition it is excellent when taking
into account its age, with just a replacement set of handles, which
are of the originals design and style, and various old scuffs, scrapes and
abrasions. All in all an incredibly beautiful and useful piece of furniture
fit to adorn and space that somebody chooses to use it for.)
