Large Regency Mahogany Wine Cooler (England, circa 1835)
A Fine Quality Regency Mahogany Sarcophagus Shaped
Wine Cooler Of Imposing, Large, Proportions Having
Superbly Figured Carved Handle To Well Figured Hinged
Top Enclosing Lined Interior, Over Panelled Sides And
Original Bracket Feet With Concealed Castors
Makers Stamp Of ” T & G Seddon ”
( The choice of timber and overall quality of this stunning wine cooler
is very much in keeping with what you would expect to find in an item
produced in the workshops of the renowned London cabinet making
firm of T & G Seddon. The overall proportion is of a scale which we have
rarely, if ever seen, and gives the item a real importance. Some lead lining
remains to the interior, however it is probably not watertight. The item also
comes with a fully working lock and key and offers an immense amount of
storage space. Without a doubt this is one of the best of this design which
we have ever owned.
When Thomas & George Seddon took on the family firm in around they continued
to operate from the existing London House premises until 1826 when they branched
out into a West End Showroom at 16 Lower Grosvenor Street. Just a year later, in
1827 the firm entered into a high profile, temporary partnership with Nicholas Morel
for the purpose of furnishing Windsor Castle. The arrangement last for four years and
by the end of it had resulted in the firm of T & G Seddon being awarded a Royal
Warrant in 1832, allowing them to add a crown to their name stamp from then
onwards. )
